About the Program

The conservation and management of Egypt’s archaeological heritage is an important task. The overwhelming number of sites, monuments and artifacts scattered all over the country and the ever-increasing pace of urbanization around archaeological sites as well as environmental hazards add another dimension to the problem. The documentation, protection and restoration of sites for future generations has become a vital matter best achieved through the creation of an extended archeological Geographical Information System (GIS). The system offers three consecutive levels of information.


Background

The Archeological Map of Egypt program is a multidimensional program aiming to employing the latest information technology to produce a powerful documentation and management tool for the Egyptian archaeological sites that are spread all over the country. It involves dividing the information of the archaeological sites into three levels (National, Sites, and the Monuments level) and using the multimedia technologies in conjunction with the GIS to document the archeological and geographical details of each monument.


GIS

The three Level of The Archeological Map of Egypt The First level is the national one, showing a basic map with all archaeological sites and allowing the user to zoom into different regions and/or select sites according to certain criteria such as the dating of the site, its type, … etc. At the Second Level, a detailed map displays the site and its components as well as the basic data about each monument, its dating, the owner and his titles, the type and the category of its structure, a brief description of the architectural elements and selected bibliography on the site. Within the Third level, a precise and detailed description of the chosen monument is presented and displayed. A detailed plan of the monument is exhibited and is occasionally linked to a 3-D model of the architectural structure, demonstrating its elements and allowing the possibility of a virtual visit.
